Types of Air Freight Options

Due to the inevitable changes taking place around the world and the need to quickly send and receive various items between countries, the airline industry has given birth to a new method of shipping – air freight.

Air cargo usually loads cargo classified into different categories to make boarding more organized and easier.

Some basic bases for air cargo categorization are:

  • Item type
  • What is the size of the item, in terms of number of items in the shipment and size, and,
  • The number of days or hours required for a shipment to reach the indicated destination.

Remittances, on the other hand, are categorized as follows:

Household goods include art pieces, furniture, and other similar items that are primarily transported by household goods (HHG) movers such as North American Van Lines and Bekins.

The "Express" category, on the other hand, includes personal items and small business goods that are often considered overnight shipments (or express shipments, express letters, and overnight express). These vehicles are carried out by transport companies such as FedEx Express, UPS and DHL.

Since most items that fall into this category are relatively small and typically weigh no more than a few pounds, they are usually in the air carrier's own packaging.

Service levels vary depending on the service offered by the carrier or personally selected by the shipper. They usually travel by plane and may be delivered the same day they are sent to the carrier or may take several days to travel.

Packages that are slightly larger and heavier than express items are considered packages. This includes shipping boxes, regardless of content. Carriers such as UPS and FedEx Ground provide services for this type of shipment. Orders cover most business-to-consumer items and services and generally do not exceed the 100-pound weight category. Because they are relatively small, they are usually in the sender's or carrier's own packaging.

The types of services in this category also vary. However, various ground transportation can travel 500 to 700 miles per day in approximately 3 to four days, depending on the service provided by the shipper or the service option selected by the customer. These shipments do not always travel by air; instead, they are transported by road and rail.

Freight covers the largest loads in the industry. It is divided into two broad categories, primarily: LTL larger-than-truckload cargo and TL or truckload cargo.

Cargo less than a truckload is also known as motor cargo. They often cover most business-to-business transactions. Services range from transporting items weighing 100 pounds to those weighing no more than 15,000 pounds. Since LTL trailers are only 28 inches long, most air freight of this type cannot exceed this length.

Unlike smaller packages, shipments are not always in company packaging.

Truck shipping covers larger shipments, from 15,000 pounds to 40,000 pounds, with a maximum length of 53 inches. This type of air cargo is different from all other categories because it usually does not stop on its journey and is not mixed with other shipments. Most are often arranged through freight brokers and online marketplaces.

When taking advantage of this type of air freight, it is best to fully understand all the terms covered, including claims, pricing and insurance.
